From the very first conversations, it was clear this project was needed. Family members started remembering things they hadn’t thought about in years. An uncle mentioned a jitney driver everyone in the neighborhood used to call on. Cousins started asking their own parents questions they’d never thought to ask before.
That’s the response we hope to keep building on. Not headlines, but kitchen table conversations. Not a finished history, but an invitation for Manayunk’s Black families to start talking to each other again about what they remember, and to trust that someone is finally writing it down.
We’re still early. But every person who has shared a name, a memory, or a photo has confirmed the same thing: this history was never lost. It was just waiting for someone to ask.
